A deadly earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, killing more than 700. The 8.8-magnitude quake was followed by over 50 significant aftershocks, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. Power remains out in many areas and transportation is difficult due to road damage.

Prayer is requested for the 2 million people affected by the earthquake, as well as the immediate relief workers trying to reach survivors.

The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Chile in 1962. In 2009, Chile reported 62 Churches of the Nazarene, 57 of which had been officially organized. There were 2,215 total members in Chile, which is part of the South American Region, at last report.

The Church of the Nazarene's South America Region has an initial report concerning Nazarenes on their web site. To view the report (which is in Spanish), click here. The region reports Central District Nazarenes are well despite the devastation. Information is still being gathered on the Bio Bio and Los Lagos districts.

For more information on this disaster, see your preferred news web site.

A continuing report: Nazarene churches affected by Haiti earthquake
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries-Caribbean continues to receive sporadic reports from Nazarene churches in Haiti due to limited lines of communication from a country which remains devastated from the January 12 earthquake.

Haiti South Central District
The district superintendent reports 17 churches are down and many pastor's houses have been destroyed.

Central District
The Nazarene church in Boutin is reported to be down.

Tabarre
The Tabarre church reports eight people injured and many members have lost their houses.

Bel-Air
The Nazarene church of Bel-Air has many of their members missing. There is still no report on the total amount of people that have died here, but there are three that have been confirmed dead.

Lastic
The Nazarene church of Lastic knows of one member still considered missing. Her house is down and they have not been able to find her.

Petion-Ville
The Petion-Ville Church of the Nazarene reports they have lost members and 75 percent of the church's members have lost their homes.

Additional Reports
People remain sleeping outside their houses in fear that they may collapse on them. There are homes that are still up, but damaged. After the first earthquake there was a damaged house which later collapsed and killed six people on Delmas road.

Food is becoming scarce and water is hard to get. Diesel is also running out.

While at this time it is hard to tell how many members the Church of the Nazarene in Haiti has lost, there is still hope as there have been reports people are being pulled out of the rubble still alive.

This is the time to continue to pray that God would give strength to those holding onto life and hope they may be found quickly. Continue to pray that food and water gets to the people and that God would give them strength during this time.

NCM-Caribbean: The beginnings of our response
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Wednesday, January 20, 2010

One week after the 7.0 earthquake rocked Port au Prince, Haitian pastor Franckel Formétus describes the scene on the city streets: "Since the earthquake, the street is the home of all Haitians—that is to say their room and also their living room. What can we do to overcome this situation? We should think of another way in Haiti."

Warrick to continue ministry in Caribbean; relief efforts underway

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Thursday, January 14, 2010

While the general church made the decision to transport General Superintendent J. K. Warrick from Haiti to Florida, the general superintendent is remaining in South Florida to help the Miami-based Caribbean Regional Office with response initiatives on behalf of the denomination. Although he was scheduled to conduct district assemblies in that nation, the disaster has forced suspension of those events.

Dear Nazarenes:

I want to bring you up-to-date on the latest information available to us regarding the crisis situation in Haiti. This is a first-person account of some of the things I experienced as I arrived in Haiti on the afternoon of 12 January 2010 for district assemblies.

The United States Geological Survey reported that the magnitude 7.0 quake-the most powerful to hit Haiti in a century-struck shortly before 5 p.m. Eastern Time and was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of Port-au-Prince. It could be strongly felt in eastern Cuba more than 200 miles away, witnesses said.

The earth became like an angry ocean.
