From the District Superintendent

(I have asked Rev. Larry Betz, the Assistant District Superintendent, to write this month’s article. He was a pastor just two years ago and because pastoral ministry is fresher in his mind, I wanted you to have a pastor’s perspective on Pastor Appreciation Month) - Stephen T. Anthony

From the Assistant to the D.S.

As I attempt to write this article for the eTidings I note that the calendar says it is autumn but the weather feels more like summer. October is a wonderful time of the year. The stores and roadside stands overflow with pumpkins, squash and fresh apples of all varieties. The trees are once again beginning to put on their display of brilliant colors. The hectic days of summer have given way to the more normal routine of life.

October has become a very significant time in the life of the church as it has been designated as “Pastor Appreciation Month.” This is an idea that has caught on across the Christian church and certainly the Church of the Nazarene is no exception. I well remember the many, many expressions of love I received during this time of year in the churches I had the privilege of pastoring. It seemed to me that every month was pastor appreciation but in October God’s people pulled out all the stops in their expressions of love for their pastor and parsonage family.

The church was always looking for new and different ways to show their love. One year everyone was encouraged to purchase gift certificates from the local eateries. Knowing that the local Bob Evans Restaurant was my “office away from the office” the people swamped us with their gift certificates. We ate well for weeks! Another year October was designated as take the pastor and spouse out for a meal. Every night for weeks we were honored to share a meal with a church family. This pastor appreciation month gave us a time of fellowship with our church families. It was great! And yet another year the church somehow learned we were purchasing new living room furniture from a local store. And when the furniture was delivered we were presented with a “Paid In Full” receipt. Our church family had paid the bill for us!

However I’ve found over the years the gifts were great but the people did something every year that surpassed the “things” of pastor appreciation. Every October our mail box would overflow with greeting cards. And invariably on the inside of the card there would be a hand written note filled with warm words of Christian love. I believe what the apostle Paul wrote Philippians is true of the body of Christ in our day: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1: 3—6 NIV) Pray with gladness for your pastor as you are partners together in this great work of the gospel.

I would encourage you to find a way this month to express your love, support and appreciation for your pastor. It will bless your pastor’s soul more than you can imagine. As you honor your spiritual shepherd the Lord will bless your heart as well! Pastor appreciations a win/win for everyone so in the words of Nike “Just do it.”

Yours and the Savior's,
Larry Betz

Prayer Needs:

PFC Terry Clees, Jr., son of Rev. Terry Clees, Pastor of Adrian Madison, was injured by an IED while driving his Hummer in Bagdad, Iraq on June 9, 2007.  Terry suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, various shrapnel wounds, and an extensive injury to his right arm from the explosion.  Terry is currently at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

He is in the Polytrauma Unit and is receiving excellent care including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy.

The doctors are optimistic, but guarded, regarding his recovery, and we ask that you continue to pray for Terry as he has months of therapy, several surgeries, and a great deal of recovery ahead.  We praise God for what He had done so far in Terry’s recovery, and know that God continues to watch over him.  Thank you so much for the outpouring of financial support, love, cards, and prayers that we have received during this time.  We feel truly blessed to have such a great community of believers with us at this time.

Donations to assist Rev. & Mrs. Clees in traveling to Minnesota to visit their son may be sent payable to: (on the memo line of your check please write “Clees”)

Rev. Gary SlusherFIVE PRINCIPLES OF THE MASTER’S PLAN
FOR MAKING CHRISTLIKE DISCIPLES

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20

There are five principles that we should embrace in order to make Christlike disciples who make Christlike disciples….  They are as follows:

1.  PRAYER AND FASTING
2.  THE AUTHORITATIVE WORD OF GOD
3.  THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
4.  GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY
5.  RELATIONAL MULTIPLICATION

THE AUTHORITATIVE WORD OF GOD becomes authoritative in us as we PRAY AND FAST.  Listen to what Pastor Craig Rench of Anaheim CA First Church of the Nazarene says, “Only 1% of all believers in America ever multiply or reproduce themselves by disciple making and yet our Lord Jesus expects and desires 100% of His followers to be disciple makers!  Jesus told us all to go and make disciples who would obey everything that He told us to do and that would include making disciples.  In other words, our present discipling methods and church ministries have created a church culture in America where 99% of the followers of Jesus disobey Him in this fundamental area of obedience—the Great Commission.”
It is my contention that we have developed an environment in the American church that encourages disobedience.  We have a kind of buffet Christianity where we can pick and choose what we like and reject what we don’t want to do.  The hardest work in the Christian life is making Christlike disciples.  The most time consuming job in the Christian church is making Christlike disciples.  The most rewarding endeavor in the Christian walk is making Christlike disciples.  The one activity that ninety-nine per cent of us who call ourselves Christian shun is making Christlike disciples.  Why is that?  I contend it is because we do not allow the Word of God to be authoritative in our lives.  We allow our preferences to have authority over the clear command of Jesus Christ.
So the second principle of making Christlike disciples is to make the Word of God authoritative in your life.  That will happen only by prayer and fasting with the purpose of finding God’s will for your life and for the life of your church.  James warns us in his epistle, 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:22-25 NIV).
Jesus Christ invested His life in twelve men.  Pastor Cesar Castellanos, the initiator of the G-12 movement in Bogotá, Columbia wrote, “I began to see Jesus’ ministry with clarity.  The multitudes followed, but He didn’t train the multitudes.  He only trained twelve, and everything He did with the multitudes was for the purpose of teaching the twelve.  Then the Lord asked me another question: ‘If Jesus trained twelve, should you win more than twelve or less than twelve?’”
The Apostle Paul invested his life in a few good men who spread the gospel around the world.  John Wesley was looking for men who feared nothing but God to change his world.  Hear what Allen Hadidian says about Discipling, “Discipling others is the process by which a Christian with a life worth emulating commits himself for an extended period of time to a few individuals who have been won to Christ, the purpose being to aid and guide their growth to maturity and equip them to reproduce themselves in a third spiritual generation.” I encourage you to spend some time contemplating the power of these few words and began to put them into practice.  For me it begins in becoming “a Christian with a life worth emulating,” and continues in a commitment for an extended period of time to a few Christian men.”

I contend that we need to invest our lives in a few good men and women who will reproduce themselves and ultimately, literally make Christlike disciples of thousands of women and men, teens and children in Eastern Michigan.  After all, it is the command of Jesus Christ, Himself, to all of us who call ourselves His disciples.
