News From Around Our Great District |

From the Assistant to the District Superintendent As I write this article Dr. Anthony and Marilyn are taking a well deserved vacation to Europe. Part of their itinerary will be to visit Normandy where Marilyn’s dad, Burt Cervoss, landed on D-day plus one, June 7, 1944. They will retrace some of the places where Burt, as an eighteen year old U. S. Army machine gunner, fought his way across Western Europe to secure the liberation of those Europeans who were suffering under the Axis powers. I’m sure the Anthony’s will recall Burt’s stories of fighting and being wounded in combat. They will no doubt remember many stories of the hardships Burt and his companions suffered during those days of conflict. And I’m certain they will whisper a prayer of thanksgiving for the victory won and the safe return of Burt and many of his comrades. The Anthony’s will visit the American Cemetery there at Normandy, where thousands of perfectly aligned markers stand in mute testimony to the tremendous cost paid by that “Greatest Generation” in securing the freedoms we all enjoy today. We must never forget the lessons learned during those dark days of world conflict or we just may be destined to relive them in another generation. As the Israelites were preparing to cross the Jordon River the Lord gave instruction that one man from each tribe was to pick up a stone from the midst of the river right where the priests were holding the Ark. Joshua set up the twelve stones where they camped that night. The Lord said to Joshua, “In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them…” I’m certain that the story of God’s miraculous power revealed that day was told and retold to countless generations that followed. In fact, centuries later, we are still telling the story in our day! In a few short weeks the camping & campmeeting season will be upon us once again. For over fifty years now the Lord has been using the ministries of the Eastern Michigan District campground in transforming lives to His glory. He has been lifting stones from the river bed and setting them up as memorials to His saving & sanctifying grace. His memorials are not piled up in one spot nor are they cold lifeless stones. His memorials are alive and live among us. In this fifty-first year of ministry I believe God has plans to set up some new memorials as testimony to His love and grace. It is exciting to know that right now all across the district there are children, teens and adults that are going to experience a life changing moment all because they came to camp and campmeeting in 2007! Some will be saved during these days. Others will find the cleansing work of the Holy Spirit a reality in their heart. Still others will answer God’s call to full time Christian service. And all will be blessed as we open our hearts in worship and obedience to the Holy Spirit. I trust you are planning on being a part of this year’s camps and campmeeting. I would encourage you to do a couple of things. First PRAY. Pray for all the camps and campmeeting that God will break in on us in a fresh outpouring of His Spirit. (The scheduled dates are included in this issue of the Etidings.) Pray for the camp workers and staff. Second is PLAN to attend. Clear your calendar, schedule your vacation, and make every effort to be a part of all the ministry opportunities available. Third PROVIDE. Provide an invitation to someone to join you at camp and provide a way and the means to send every child and young person in your church who wants to attend camp and campmeeting. If we will do our part; pray, plan, and provide we already know God will do more for us than we could ever imagine! We’ll be looking for you this year. District NewsEsther Griffin, mother of Our Fowlerville Church pastor Gary Griffin, passed away on May 26th in Illinois. Please pray for Gary & Joy and their family during this time of loss. Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene’s Pastor Ken Brier’s father, Charles Brier, has undergone surgery at the age of 82 for heart valve replacement earlier this week. He underwent a second surgery as well for abnormal bleeding but is according to Pastor Brier is doing as well as can be expected at this time. Charles Brier and his wife, Juanita, live in Redlands, California. Please remember the Brier family in your prayers. We congratulate Pastor Eric Ward and his wife as their baby boy, Nathan Phillip, was born on June 2 at 11:27 PM, at 19 ½ inches long, and 8 lbs. & 5 ½ oz. Welcome, Nathan!
