From the District Superintendent: New ONU Scholarship for Pastors' Children
The EMD Advisory Board is pleased to announce the establishment of a new scholarship in honor of Dr. John Q. Dickey for his 40 continuous years of service on the Olivet Nazarene University Board of Trustees. The scholarship will be established with an initial gift of $25,000. from the Advisory Board and be held in the ONU Foundation. The proceeds from the investment will be used to assist Children of Eastern Michigan District Ministers attending Olivet. It is hoped that others will also contribute to the initial investment so that every EMD Nazarene PK will receive a contribution toward their education at ONU.
During Dr. Dickey's medical practice, he took care of all Nazarene Ministers and their families at no charge. He gave priority to the parsonage families in his practice and would always make time to see them even if an appointment time was not available. In the 1980's he was honored at the Eastern Michigan District Assembly as a "Pastor's Friend". Because of his great care for the parsonage families, it was felt by the Advisory Board that endowing a scholarship in his honor to help ministers' children would be appropriate.
During Dr. Dickey's 40 years on the Trustee Board he served under three University presidents; Dr. Harold Reed, Dr. Les Parrott, and Dr. John Bowling. He has served for a number of years as Chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee and has served on the Board's Executive Committee. Dr. Dickey has never missed a meeting during his term of service.
Because the scholarship will be established in the ONU Foundation, it will qualify for matching fund money. Each church is being encouraged to consider paying their Educational Budget through the matching fund program with the matching portion to go to the Dr. John Q. Dickey Scholarship Fund. It would be great if we could grow this to $1,000,000. which would yield $50,000. annually in scholarships to our ministers children.
Because we are still in the process of setting up the scholarship, contributions for now can be sent to the Eastern Michigan District, P.O. Box 608, Fenton, MI 48430.

Prayer and Fasting: A Crucial Part of Missions
THE CALL
We recognize our absolute dependence on God and our desperate need for divine intervention.
We believe God is urging us to call all Christians of America to unite
in humility and repentance across ethnic and church boundaries to pray
persistently for a moral and spiritual awakening in the Body of Christ.
We believe this will greatly advance His Kingdom in our nation and world-wide.
THE COVENANT
We covenant to obey this call by taking the following actions:
- We will promote this call as broadly as possible.
- Individually, we will commune with God and pray with faith daily.
- We will encourage and participate regularly in corporate, believing prayer.
- We will fast as God prompts us.
- Feeling incomplete without embracing God's family from all races,
we will seek reconciliation and participation with all our brothers and
sisters.
- We will pray until God sovereignly acts.

needed library. He is seeking books that retired pastors may not be
using or wish to pass on for others to glean from.
- If the pastor who wishes to contribute books is going to the General Convention in June in Indianapolis he/she should take them to African Regional Desk at the convention center.
- If it is a large number of books to contribute they will make arrangements at the desk to meet and collect.
- If there is a pastor who wished to contribute to this library and is not going to the Convention please
feel free to contact Reta Steely - 517-546-8956 and I will make sure they get there.

Retail connection for backpacks needed
More than 500 backpacks were given out at last summer's Back to School Carnival. Most of those backpacks were purchased by one of our local churches at close-out from the previous fall for about $2 each. This year, they are only able to get about 150 backpacks through this connection, so another retail connection is needed. If anyone has a retail connection leading to more backpacks at really great pricing, one of our churches is committed to making this purchase for us.
At this time, we are not asking invidivuals or churches to purchase backpacks for full retail price. But, we are asking churches to once again collect school supplies for the carnival games to our children can "win" everything else they need to start the school year off right.
If you have this kind of connection please contact
Rev. Margie Bryce at (810) 664-3457 or mebryce@flinteastsidemission.org
"Big Prize" sought for Homerun Derby at Campmeeting
Anyone want to donate a car?? We want to make this year's softball tournament really, really memorable for some skilled slugger!
OK, if the car doesn't emerge, we'll consider another Grand Prize or a collection of medium prizes that together might make someone smile.
While I'm very serious about being able to offer a car as a prize, we'd also consider other great Grand Prize ideas. If this way of supporting the Eastside Mission appeals to you and you have a great Grand Prize to donate, please contact
Rev. Margie Bryce at mebryce@flinteastsidemission.org
Golf outing slated for August 13

Thanks to everyone for show of support during 4Him Benefit
Thanks to the generosity of many the Mission raised about $9,000 during the 4Him concert.
Thanks to the following Nazarene churches for their support of this concert (the list of our supporters during other times of the year is even longer):
Richfield Church (for hosting the event),
Bluewater, Clio Church, Deer Park Community, Flint Central Church, Flint South, Fowlerville Church, Gagetown, New Covenant, Orchard Ridge, Ridgeway Church, Swartz Creek, and
Williams Lake. The
Eastern Michigan District and
Eastern Michigan District NMI also supported this effort.

We are asking for a link to the Eastside Mission website to be
placed on EMD Church websites. The instructions to do this are on our
homepage.
In addition, if you own a business and would like to
put a link on your website as a show of support for our ministry that would
be wonderful.
