Another New Year!!!

December 31, 1957 I remember standing in our driveway pounding on a pan ushering in the New Year. The memory of this is etched in my mind because I remember being sad about leaving 1957 behind. Sad because it was the year I experienced death for the first time when my Grandfather died. It was also the year that we moved from the house I grew up in to my grandfather’s house, I started attending a new school, our family began attending a new church (Williams Lake Nazarene), and at 10 years old I realized that I was not going to be a child much longer.

Fast forward to December 31, 2007 and I found myself trying to keep my eyes open to watch Dick Clark announce the New Year. Again this New Year's Eve there was a sense of sadness and joy. Sadness because 2007 saw the death of the last person I would know as a grandparent when Marilyn’s grandmother died at 97 years old. There was joy because this year our daughter Cheri received a promotion and is now the director of a school (Siena Heights University – Southfield Campus), and it was the year that Marilyn and I had the privilege of helping Williams Lake Church celebrate their 50th anniversary as well as helping start a new church in Holly.

ChildrenOn New Year’s Eve, Marilyn and I celebrated with our daughter Cyndi, her husband Ryan and I sat with my grandchildren wishing time could stand still and these two little ones would forever want to sit on my lap or play games with me. But time has a way of marching on regardless of our wishes or situation. It is hard to tell what the next 50 years will bring or for that matter what will happen in 2008, I can only echo what the Apostle Paul said to his church friends in the town of Philippi when he said that he wanted to:

“… be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Phil 3:9-14 (KJV)

Whatever happens in 2008, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus and live for Him. If we do that -  this will be a great year!

Happy New Year!

Up to 100 homeless and less fortunate people in Detroit received a hot meal, blankets and clothing Dec. 15 thanks to the generosity of the Shelby Township-based Orchard Ridge Church of the Nazarene and others.

RJ Helguera, 21, worship arts leader at the church, said the mission to Detroit takes place on a monthly basis between the church and the Christian ministry groups Elevate and Quarterlife. For the past two months, the church has gathered with the groups near the Cass Corridor region to set up a buffet line and chairs. The food is available to anyone.

"Our group brings ham, mashed potatoes, soup, chili, hot chocolate and clothes, jackets, hats and socks, and we make that available for anyone in need," said Helguera, of Rochester. More...

Rev. Gary SlusherFIVE PRINCIPLES OF THE MASTER’S PLAN FOR MAKING CHRISTLIKE DISCIPLES

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV).
There are five principles that we should embrace in order to make Christlike disciples who make Christlike disciples who make Christlike disciples…  They are as follows:

1.  PRAYER AND FASTING
2.  THE AUTHORITATIVE WORD OF GOD
3.  THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
4.  GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY
5.  RELATIONAL MULTIPLICATION

We continue our discourse this month with principle number four, GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY.  Let’s look at GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY from the perspective of Jesus’ calling of His first disciples recorded in Matthew 4:18-20.  Listen to the Word of God – 18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
I find three important principles about GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY.   The first principle of accountability is THE PRINCIPLE OF INTENTIONALITY.  “They were casting a net into the lake…”  In order to catch fish one must go fishing.  No one goes fishing accidentally.  Intentional fishing includes acquisition of the right equipment.  Casting nets, rods and reels, fishing line and hooks, transportation (to the lake and on the lake) and licensing, and bait that will attract the fish are all necessary if one intends to catch fish. Intentional fishing involves setting aside sufficient time to fish.  Do not be deceived, it takes time to fish.  Intentionality is an important first principle in GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY.
The second principle of accountability is THE PRINCIPLE OF INSTRUCTION.  "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." The best fishermen are the ones who have been trained in the art of fishing.  There is sometimes an innate sense in finding fish and an almost magical touch in catching them.  But the best fishermen are the ones who fish regularly and who fish a lot with a master fisherman that can show them the skills of catching fish.  Very few fishermen become proficient in catching fish without someone to instruct them in how to catch fish.  Skilled fishermen have been instructed by a master.
The third principle of accountability is THE PRINCIPLE OF IMPLEMENTATION. "At once they left their nets and followed him." You can acquire the equipment and be instructed in the skills of fishing.  You can intentionally travel to the lake, the pond, or the river.  But unless you throw a net, or cast a lure, you will not catch fish.  Let’s be honest.  There is a significant difference between fishing and catching fish.  There is a significant difference in talking about catching fish and actually catching fish.  There is a significant difference between watching someone fish and catching fish.  We are fishers of men only when we implement what we know in theory by doing what we know to do in fact.
Too many of us call ourselves Christlike disciples without any real sense of accountability for our discipleship.  Two questions of accountability emerge:  (1) Who is discipling you?  (To whom are you accountable for your catch of fish?)  (2)  Whom are you discipling? (Who is accountable to you for a catch of fish?)  Christlike discipleship will occur in an atmosphere of GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY.

Flint Eastside MissionHappy New Year to all of you! As we start out 2008, a couple of things come to mind. First off, is what a wonderful experience the Christmas dinner at the Mission was. If you didn't get to be there, you missed an exciting atmosphere of singing, chatting, eating, and thanking God for His wonderful gift to all of us! We had over 200 turkeys to distribute. We served almost 400 meals. AND, in excess of 1,500 gifts were given out! There was a visit by Santa and his elf too! Thanks to the many, many volunteers that came down and made this possible.

Next, I'm reminded just how good that most of us have it. Many of us have just come through a time of family, friends and fellowship with lots of great food. We've also come through a time of increased giving because of the holidays. Keep in mind that those that are less fortunate are in need all the year through. And, most of all, thank you for your continued support of the Flint Eastside Mission! God bless! Sammi Justice Director of Publicity
