Rev. Gary SlusherFIVE PRINCIPLES OF THE MASTER’S PLAN
FOR MAKING CHRISTLIKE DISCIPLES
(Continued)

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20

There are five principles that we should embrace in order to make Christlike disciples who make Christlike disciples….  They are as follows:

1.  PRAYER AND FASTING
2.  THE AUTHORITATIVE WORD OF GOD
3.  THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
4.  GENUINE ACCOUNTABILITY
5.  RELATIONAL MULTIPLICATION

We continue this month with principle number three, THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.  The fastest growing churches in the world embrace the principles and values of disciple making strategies such as Governments of Twelve or Each One Win One.  The one prerequisite that appears in each discipleship plan is the necessity of THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.  Here is what Dr. Craig Wesley Rench wrote concerning the Governments of Twelve (G-12) movement:  “The anointing of God does not come effortlessly.  There is a steep price to be paid in prayer, personal holiness, waiting on the Lord and obedience.  Leaders of the G12 model attempt to take whatever time is necessary to “hear from the Lord” for each group session that they lead.  Waiting on the Lord as the apostles and the 120 did in the upper room before Pentecost is the model that G12 proponents follow.  They also practice the impartation of God’s anointing through the “laying on of hands” and prayer by spiritual leaders. Focused, intentional, passionate praying for God’s anointing is an ear-mark of the G12 movement.”  (Rench, 2005)
Stan Toler and Louie Bustle state in their book, Each One Win One, “The principal foundation of the … movement has been the clarion call that every believer be filled with the Holy Spirit.  God’s willingness to transform believers, cleanse their hearts from sin, and give them the power to witness for Christ has always been our message.  However, there must be a renewal of its emphasis.  Pastors must preach this marvelous message with confidence and passion…. The result has been the accelerated growth of the church…. It is a Spirit-filled church movement.” (Toler and Bustle, 2006, p. 19)
Cesar Castellanos of Bogotá, Columbia insists that the beginning point for discipleship leaders is an Encounter Weekend Retreat where Christians have a true life-changing encounter with God and are given an opportunity to be sanctified by God’s Holy Spirit.  This is prior to the year-long training that must take place.
We must keep first things first.  THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT can occur only in an atmosphere of PRAYER AND FASTING where the people of God have willingly submitted themselves to THE AUTHORITATIVE WORD OF GOD.  There are no shortcuts.  You cannot replicate or imitate THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.  You will not see transformed lives or genuine growth without this Spirit anointing.  My prayer is that the pastors and leaders of the Eastern Michigan District will pay the steep price in prayer, personal holiness, and waiting upon the Lord.
God is growing a great church in Eastern Michigan. We are blessed to be a part of it.
